Popular Species of Plants Producing Coffee Beans

There are mainly two species of plants that produce coffee beans and they do differ in their caffeine content due to various factors.

#1 Caffeine in Arabica Coffee Beans

It is also known as Coffea Arabica which is regarded as the coffee beans of high quality which has a sweet and fruity flavor. Arabica coffee beans contain 1.5% caffeine.

#2 Caffeine in Robusta Coffee Beans

It is also known as Coffea canephora which is regarded as the coffee beans which are easy to farm. They have quite a bitter and strong flavor compared to Arabica. It contains the caffeine content compared to Arabica that is 3% caffeine.

#1 Green Coffee Beans

Caffeine content may depend upon which coffee beans you are eating or drinking. If you are having a green coffee bean that has some earthly taste is used for various health issues, it contains roughly 5 ounces of caffeine.

Whereas roasted beans that have caramelized flavor contain less caffeine compared to green beans. Dark roasted beans contain less caffeine than lightly roasted beans because of the density and cooking time.

Advantages of Adding Caffeine to Your Diet

Caffeine when taken in the right amount is very beneficial for health which includes

  • A coffee bean contains a high level of antioxidants in the form of chlorogenic acids which helps to reduce cardiovascular disease.
  • 10 % intake of coffee beans is recommended in your diet daily as these beans are high in fiber which helps in preventing constipation.
  • Caffeine improves mental balance and functioning
  • It helps in decreasing blood sugar levels and high blood pressure.

Disadvantages of Adding Caffeine to Your Diet

Everything has two phases, same is with the caffeine; it also has disadvantages which are as follows:

  • Eating coffee beans can lead to heartburn due to the presence of caffeine and catechols which leads to the production of stomach acid.
  • Eating coffee leads to an increase in the production of low-density lipoprotein, the bad cholesterol which is due to the presence of compounds cafestol and kahweol that is present in beans in 10 to 40 times greater than brewed coffee.
  • Excess intake of caffeine may lead to sleep problems.

Final Thoughts

If you want to have more caffeine in your diet it is better to consume coffee beans than a cup of brewed coffee because on average 8 coffee beans carry caffeine equivalent to one espresso. 

Roasted and unroasted beans may differ in caffeine but the level of roast does make much difference in the caffeine content. If you are a lover of strong bitter coffee then you can opt for Robusta coffee and if you love fruity flavor then choose Arabica. The choice is all yours.
